Patient Experience Simulation Lab

Here's what you can expect if you attend a NICU Simulation Lab Session.

Designers:

1. Overview of the project’s development

a. Design competition

b. Design guidelines

2. Overview of the evidence that influenced the design decisions

3. Simulation of activities that occur inside the NICU and discussion of the impact of the design to facilitate the function of the space

4. Family advisors present their concerns and needs for the NICU environment.

5. Nurses present their concerns and needs for the NICU environment.

6. Attendees provide feedback and pose questions to the presentation team.


Hospital Participants:

1. Description of the project’s development

a. Design competition

b. Design guidelines

2. Overview of the evidence that influenced the design decisions

3. Review of each design component in the room and the rationale the decision

4. Hospitals discuss their specific interest, questions, current concerns as it relates to the NICU and the team addresses them as they relate to the NICU mock-up.

The NICU Patient/Family Experience Simulation Lab

The NICU Patient/Family Experience Simulation Lab is a full scale mock up of a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) single family room, showing a portion of the adjoining corridor. This model was developed as a result of the 2013 Patient & Family Centered NICU Design Competition. It currently serves as the stage for the Patient Experience Simulation Lab, an interactive learning laboratory that enables health facility stakeholders, designers, providers, researchers and students to "kick the tires" on a healthcare space in order to determine what solutions should be implemented into their new projects.
