The NICU Patient/Family Experience Simulation Lab

Patient Experience Sim Lab - Discussion

2013 Patient & Family Centered NICU: Family-Centered Care

- Part I

This clip/simulation shows a registered nurse explaining the importance of

family-centered care and kangaroo care in the NICU. The lab (backdrop) shows necessary the proximity of the family chair to the incubator in order to allow for kangaroo care.

2013 Patient Experience Simulation Lab at the Healthcare Design Conference: Created by Institute for Patient-Centered Design, the Patient Experience Simulation Lab allows designers, and health facility stakeholders to explore a full scale model of a space within a hospital from the perspective of the patient and family. Real nurses, patients and families come together to discuss the needs of the end users of such spaces and to brainstorm on solutions for empowering patients and families by design.

"Design with Patients in Mind."

This project was inspired by the Recommended Standards for Newborn ICU Design, with Dr. Robert White and Dr. Mardelle Shepley leading the project's advisory team.

2014 Patient Experience Simulation Lab - Introduction to the NICU Simulation Lab Project

Introduction to the NICU simulation lab project, including goals of the NICU staff and design elements considered in the NICU model.

Special thanks to Heather Townsend, RMSR (Executive Director of Education & Health Care Design at Creche Innovations) for her volunteer service in the 2014 NICU Patient Experience Simulation Lab, video recording the sessions.

The NICU Patient/Family Experience Simulation Lab is a full scale mock up of a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) single family room, showing a portion of the adjoining corridor. This model was developed as a result of the 2013 Patient & Family Centered NICU Design Competition. This served as the stage for the Patient Experience Simulation Lab, an interactive learning laboratory that enables health facility stakeholders, designers, providers, researchers and students to "kick the tires" on a healthcare space in order to determine what solutions should be implemented into their new projects.

Patient Experience Sim Lab - Discussion

Patient Experience Simulation Lab

Here's what you can expect if you attend a NICU Simulation Lab Session.

Designers:
1. Overview of the project’s development
a. Design competition
b. Design guidelines
2. Overview of the evidence that influenced the design decisions
3. Simulation of activities that occur inside the NICU and discussion of the impact of the design to facilitate the function of the space
4. Family advisors present their concerns and needs for the NICU environment.
5. Nurses present their concerns and needs for the NICU environment.
6. Attendees provide feedback and pose questions to the presentation team.
Hospital Participants:
1. Description of the project’s development
a. Design competition
b. Design guidelines
2. Overview of the evidence that influenced the design decisions
3. Review of each design component in the room and the rationale the decision
4. Hospitals discuss their specific interest, questions, current concerns as it relates to the NICU and the team addresses them as they relate to the NICU mock-up.
